Spoiled dog

It took only took 17 months for Inde to escape sleeping in her crate
at night. It took just a little longer for her to "earn" the right to
sleep in the new leather chair. Oh, yeah, and each house has been
purchased because of the yard/doggy playground. Right, and the king-
sized bed. Need I say more? This dog is spoiled.

Catie!

I like Catie, but not as much as I want to. Although I always enjoy
her shows, I'm always a little let down by her song writing. I hold
her to a high standard and maybe that is not fair. I'm going to try to
cut her some slack. And she is pretty cute on stage.

Ingrid and the Unicorns

Good music, good seats and good friends. Now, bring on Catie Curtis!

Why can't people park?

Really? You are going to put your huge truck right in the middle of
two spaces in the street?

I envy my pets

I used to be jealous that Inde and KC had all day to sit around and do nothing. Since I have spent the last two months unemployed, however, I am no longer jealous about that. I am jealous that Inde and KC seem to be quite skilled sleepers, something I am not. Inde gets up with me, walks down the stairs, jumps up on the couch, curls up and is right back asleep. She spends about 20 hours a day sleeping. And KC, well, she sleeps about 22 hours a day. Actually, I'm not sure she is ever awake! Me, I wake up in the middle of the night and my mind is going a mile a minute thinking about all kinds of crazy things. Really, what do I have to think about? I'm not really doing anything. And when I try to go back to sleep, I can't. I've tried this technique I used in law school to help me visualize being asleep, but that has not worked lately. Maybe once I start working again my brain will be tired at night from working during the day and I will be able to sleep better. I sure hope so.

What?

I'm minding my own business and trying to cross things off my to do
list when this guy brings his dog into the hair salon. I'm down with
dogs so no worry. But then he picks him up while he is getting a post-
cut wash. I don't know about you, but I thought this was a little weird.

#9 Thing I like about Chicago

Inde thinks it tastes good!

It's official

I am no longer unemployed. I have accepted an offer of full time employment with a start date of 3/22. Now, I better get serious about my "to do" list!

If you know me, you know that the last two months have been very hard on me. After 20 years of working non-stop (even through back surgery), I suddenly had nothing to do and all day to do it. As a friend in the same boat described it to me, "I wake up in the morning and the rest of the world has started the day without any care that I am not in it." Thanks to all of you who have stood by me and supported me. I tried to stay positive and focus on positive things like running, cooking, baking and playing tennis, but I know I failed, often and gloriously. Frequently, I was not very fun to be around. So, thanks to those who stood by me and supported me on a daily basis. On a brighter note, I can use your help now motivating me to get through my to do list! Here it is, in no real order of importance:

1. The vinyl conversion project - see below. Very time consuming, but I'm making progress.
2. The beer cap / label / blog project - this will be a huge effort and does not even include making a bar and decorating it. Yikes!
3. Hair cut - DONE!
4. Running - create a racing / training schedule. So far, I'm signed up for the Soldier Field 10 miler.
5. Tennis - Get back out on the court and make-up my missed classes!
6. Reading - finish my Christmas present - Falls the Shadow (I'm about half way through)
7. Reading - Re-read Harry Potter 7 so I'm ready to critique the movie.
8. Cooking - make cream of potato soup. Yummy.
9. Vacation - take a vacation!! After I start work, I will only get two weeks. Two weeks? Really? Yet another reason I wish that I had been born in Europe.
10. Sleep - I think I'll need it!

There you have it. I know there are more things I want to do, but this already is an ambitious list. Let me know if you want to take on one of the items.

Food coma!

Eating and drinking the last 36 hours without a break. Lunch today -
fish and chips. Awesome. Beer - very good. Company - extraordinary. On
to dinner!

#8 thing I like about Chicago

Snow - finally. After a fun dinner at the Gage, we stepped outside
into a snow globe across from the bean and those crazy face fountains.
Everything looks cooler through a snow globe. Shake shake sh... shake
it!

Things I like about Chicago / the Midwest: 4-7

Back to an old theme / request: name ten things I actually like about
Chicago and/or the Midwest.

4. The city skyline. This is not my favorite view, but it is the
easiest for me to access.

5. Lake Michigan. In 2009, the lake never warmed up for good
swimming, but 2008 was awesome. I was in the lake the last week of
September, not just wading but up past my waist while inde was swimming.

6. The lake shore trail, when it is not crowded. This reminds me of
the trail by the Schuykill River in the best city in the world.

7. Screwing St. Louis. When I look out into the lake, I see the intake
towers for the city water supply and I'm reminded of how the engineers
reversed the flow of the Chicago River and sent the Chicago sludge
south to St. Louis. Well done.

I will think long and hard to see if I can come up with three more
things I like about Chicago. Feel free to help me.

A good night

Today was a tough day, but tonight was a different story - four new
ales and a scrumptious frittata. We have nurtured quite a nice little
beer / food swap and tonight was our turn to reap the benefits. We
shared four new ales, all of which were gifts - and all of which were
good, but the frittata blew them away. It also blew away my homemade
chocolate chip cookies. Hats off. And a good time was had by all. Oh,
yeah, and it's only Thursday. Happy hour tomorrow, out of town guests
arriving on Sunday, it's going to be a good weekend.

Project vinyl conversion

I have this fairly extensive collection of vinyl. Like most music
lovers of my generation, I have a lot of "standards" such as U2 (War,
Unforgettable Fire), the Police (Ghost in the Machine), well, you get
it. Most of these have been replaced by CDs. However, I also have a
bunch of 12" singles from the new wave invasion such as the Smiths,
the Alarm, Love and Rockets, etc. The cool thing about many of these
is that they were (1) not available on the album because they were
live recordings or extended versions; or (2) there is something cool
about the actual vinyl - for example it's purple or has a photo on it.
Many of these previously unavailable versions have since become
available on cd. And the cool vinyl is sort of lost forever.

I also have a number of albums that I inherited from my older sister.
I believe that some of these are no longer available. These include
Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Frampton, the Rolling Stones (Sticky
Fingers - you know what I'm talking about). About four years ago I
bought a turntable to convert selected vinyl to digital. Today, I
finally started this project. I picked Jethro Tull as my first album.
After some difficulty setting up the player and installing the
software, I carefully pulled the album from the special protective
sheath that I purchased 30 years ago and placed it on the turntable.
Now, I'm blasting Teacher, Aqualung, Thick as a Brick and Bungle in
the Jungle. It really takes me back. I'm psyched that this actually
works, but not excited about: (1) manually entering the track breaks
as it converts, (2) manually entering the track information. There is
something nice about the little crackling you get when you listen to
vinyl.

This project should take me well into the summer. It took me almost a
year to load my 1,200 CDs into iTunes and that was largely automatic
after inserting the cd.

Stupid CTA map

I was riding the blue line home from my fun day when I decided to
actually look at the map. What is wrong with this picture? If you
are not from Chicago, you might not know. Most maps depict the
streets / landmarks with north at the top of the page and east on the
right side. Not so with this map. Van Buren and Lake run east west,
but are shown running from the top of the page to the bottom. Wabash
and Wells run north / south, but are shown in the traditional east to
west direction. Maybe CTA is trying to confuse visitors. Or, maybe the
map didn't fit well when in the other orientation. My suggestion, make
both maps a little smaller or add a legend that shows the proper
compass directions.

One of these is not like the other

After my fun lunch, I went on a quest for a jigsaw puzzle that is a
picture of Chicago. I ended up in the "Wrigleyville" section of
Macy's. They have lots of memorabilia for various Chicago professional
sports teams (I.e., Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks). Right in
the middle of the Cubs hats, however, is this stack of Notre Dame
hats. WTF? Who decided to put hats for a college team in Indiana in
the Chicago marketplace? Silly.

An ad for a new gym

I had a nice lunch downtown with a friend this afternoon. Right
outside the cafeteria, a salesperson had a table with information
about a new gym. As part of her educational information, she had these
two props. She encouraged me to pick up both props. Bad decision. I
still had a fried lunch and full sugar soda. Good decision.

I know our vegetable car is under there somewhere

Driving three hours through a snowstorm results in inches of frozen /
slushy / salty / sandy / dirty junk all over the vegetable car.

Mongolian Grill

Yummy! After a great hockey game, we went to the Mongolian Grill for
dinner. We all enjoyed our meals and enjoyed watching them cooked on
the giant circular grill. This is the second time I have eaten at a
Mongolian Grill and this time I had not just run 26 miles.

Americana

In honor of Presidents' weekend, we have created a unique display of
our patriotism.

Shake shake shake it

If it looks too good to be true, then it is. We saw this infomercial
on tv while on the romantic getaway in Columbus. In addition to
serious plausibility issues, this video is just plain wrong.

Environmentally friendly straws

Columbus is on the cutting edge of the green world, which is great
because it's located in the armpit of the rust belt. The straws are
made of paper, not plastic, and they are very thick. I still think
McDonalds has the best straws.

Authentic German entertainment

The food and atmosphere at the Sausage Haus were great!

A taste of Germany

Right here in Columbus! We had to wait an hour to be seated, but I
hear it's worth it.

Thomas Jefferson would approve

Pack mules

So, we went to Columbus for the weekend. Do you think we brought
enough stuff? I knew that drunk packing created problems, but I've
discovered that hungover packing creates a similar problem. It's hard
to make decisions so I bring everything. But invariably I forget
something. It is not uncommon for me to bring 8 shirts and no bras. I
can't wait to see what I packed this morning.

Uh-oh!

This is not good!

More driving ...

I know what job I could not do, truck driver! We just entered Ohio for
a fun weekend in Columbus with some old camp friends. 95 more miles to
go.

Staples?

Can anyone see more than one staple in this picture (excluding beer
and Pepsi)?

I thought not.

# 3 thing I like about Chicago

Occasionally, we get snow. I like snow; it has many useful purposes.
For example, snow makes the best ice pack for an injury because it is
soft and pliable. Snow also makes an excellent third fridge for
chilling special beer that doesn't fit in your fridge. Right now, I
have seven SlyFoxes preparing to be enjoyed. So, there you have it
Chicago lovers, I'm up to three things I like about Chicago. Seven
more to go.

Inde surfing

Inde is waiting her turn to surf the net. Right now she is interested
in the weather report and wants to know how much snow her cousins
Bingo and Toby got in Philly. She heard that the snow is deeper than
Toby is tall.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

View from the top

Finally! The snow has arrived and it's coming down hard now! I've
shoveled twice and I'd estimate that we have about 6" so far. I'm so
excited!

What happened to share the road?

I do like the sticker, though!

Roll with it

I roll over. Or under. Really, I'm not that obsessive over the toilet
paper, as long as it's soft. But it's an interesting question -
especially if you live with someone who obsessively rolls the other way.

This is KC

I'm not sure whether I've introduced KC to the blog yet. This is
perhaps not the most flattering picture (of the shower or the cat) but
it is an accurate depiction of the other hunter and gatherer in the
family. You see, KC refuses to drink water from her bowl. Instead, she
seeks out the freshest water possible. Here she is catching the drops
of water after someone has showered. I'm not sure how, why or if this
tastes better than when I put the same water in a bowl for her. Maybe
it doesn't. Maybe she just likes the challenge. She also likes to
drink from your glass when you leave it on the nightstand. When I went
out of town last weekend, I left her a bowl of water (untouched) and a
large plastic cup (2/3 empty when I retruned). This would be merely
an interesting fact about this cat except that in Philly she learned
how to turn on the faucet in the tub and there is no emergency
overflow drain. I guess I should keep on leaving out glasses of water.

I don't care about the super bowl

I just want to sleep! I went to the kennel and met a new boy dog. We
stayed up late every night talking and then I kept trying to get out
of my crate by nosing the door open. I didn't eat any food but my
tummy got really sick anyway. It's hard on me being in the kennel. And
now I smell yucky and I hear you threatening to give me a bath. I'm so
tired I won't even wake up to chase the cat as she chases that laser
light. But you keep waking me up with all your screaming for the
Saints. Won't you just let me sleep?

Leaving Florida

At the Orlando airport getting ready to fly back to Chicago. The
flight to Philadelphia is cancelled so I guess it's a good thing we
are flying back to Chicago, the land of cold but no snow.

We are at our gate engaging in some class A people watching. So far,
three Saints shirts, zero colts shirts, 7 OSU shirts / hats, a whole
plane of KU, one ND, one Blackhawks, one Shamrock shuffle t-shirt, and
a raccoon wearing a flight attendant uniform. Full plane of Saints
fans. And when did it become ok to wear spandex tights and a tube top?

Rental car

This is the license plate from the rental car. I'm not sure which
350th anniversary we are commemorating - Florida? Orlando? Chevy?

Pink Flamingo

I really wanted to bring back one of these but there was no room in my
checked bag and my travel partner would not let me carry it on the
plane.

I know I ramble on about the superiority of the east coast, but I want
to emphasize that I am referring to the northeast - New York,
Philadelphia, and, maybe Boston.

Speed chill works

So does speed drink. Yuengling isn't that bad, especially when it's
super chilled.

Party after the game

After the Lightning game, there was a free party outside the stadium
with a live band. A crowd of about 500 people stayed to celebrate the
overtime win. You can't do that in February in Chicago or
Philadelphia. And you certainly can't have scantily clad women
selling cigarettes. Maybe the south isn't so bad. What?!? I didn't
mean that.

Cold now, please!

Speed chillin' a couple Yuenglings after a long day. Hurry up and get
cold!

True love waits

That's a good motto. But I'm not sure it should go on the back side of
your sweat pants. Or that you should wear them out of the house.

Huh?

I found one of my anonymous readers - at the intersection of Easy
Street and Way, right where I met her almost 12 years ago.

A well-deserved martzen

What a long strange trip indeed. We flew from Chicago to Orlando, then
drove 95 minutes to Tampa. We would have made it faster, but the gps
was not aware that we were driving on a newly-completed highway and
she took us on a detour through some questionable 'hoods thereby
extending our drive by about 10 minutes. So much for technology. The
martzen was ok. The game should be good because the Lightning have
two former Flyers, including Nitty!

One more thing I learned

Times are tough all over. I remember when the airlines used to give
you a whole can of soda and a couple bags of peanuts. The soda gig has
been up for a long time, but today I got the smallest bag of peanuts
I've ever seen. In the interest of science, I counted - it had 12
peanuts, and that's generous becuase some of them were halves. At
least they were honey roasted.

A second thing I like about Chicago

Again, for those of you who think I should stop bashing the Midwest, I
also like Nuts on Clark and their "Chicago mix" of cheese popcorn and
caramel corn. Two down, eight to go.

Comments from Midway airport

I consider myself a fairly seasoned traveler, but there are always new
things to learn. Here is a sampling of what I learned today.

1. Although flying is no longer the special event that it was say in
the fifties (when people dressed for a flight like they dressed for
church), at least one young boy still gives it the respect it
deserves. He showed up at the airport in his Iron Man costume. And,
no, he didn't set off the metal detector.

2. A pint glass at the airport pub actually is smaller than a pint and
still costs $6.75, plus tip.

3. Unlike Philadelphia airport, there is not a standard delay of 20-30
minutes when boarding every flight. So, if your flight is scheduled to
leave at 4, you really do need to be at your gate at 3:30 for them to
start boarding. If you show up at say 3:37, they will already have
boarded the entire A group and the first 50 people in the B group. You
will be stuck in the middle of 18 high school cheerleaders going to
some meet or competition.

4. Funnel cake is not just for county fairs. Nuts on Clark now serves
funnel cake and it is very good.

5. My watch no longer sets off the metal detector. I feel much safer.

6. The expert line at security actually goes slower for a number of
reasons: (a) everybody has a laptop and smart phone, which they are
using instead of getting their stuff into the bins; (b) the xray
machines have a shorter conveyor belt, which causes a log jam; and (c)
there are only two xray machines.

To those critics who wanted me to list the things I actually like
about the Midwest, here is the first one: my flights usually leave
midway on time or early. Don't worry, Philly, they still have an
unusually long wait at baggage claim.

Overzealous

Really? We've had about 5" of snow this year, all of which appears to
be piled up in this photo. And yet the person plowing this lot knocked
over one of the cement pillars. I think these are similar to the
cement structures that were erected in front of all state and federal
buildings after 9/11. I feel really safe now.

Delayed post - back in Flatland

I tookthis picture about 45 minutes outside of Chicago. Nothing but
flat fields as far as the eye can see. The Midwest is indeed
geographically challenged. I miss the northeast already. And I really
miss WaWa! What is it about those shorti hoagies that is so
wonderful? I mean, I like Jimmy John's, but it does not hold a candle
to a shorti with some Herr's BBQ potato chips - lip smackin' goodness!
Take me home, intrastate highway, to a place I belong, northeastern
USA, take me home ...

My car is blue?

For weeks now I have been laboring under the false impression that my
car was white? Or antique white. I ran it through the car wash today
and it is blue! Now I have to correct my Illinois car registration and
Chicago city sticker - to the tune of about $250. I guess winter is
just a scam by the government to use salt on the roads and drive
upstate revenues.

Hockey pucks

Before they turned into whole wheat hockey puck disasters, they were
nice soft pieces of dough that had risen less than I would have liked
but still seemed on their way to becoming tasty pretzel rolls. Who
knew the disaster that awaited?

Eat your veggies!

They don't cite any study in support of this claim, but I love
broccoli so I approve of the message!
